Join the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse for a unique and tasty event! Sample the best offerings from pizza restaurants in the Portsmouth/Kittery area. More than 10 restaurants will be taking part. Along with pizza, there will be salad, soft drinks, and cookies. There will also be a silent auction with great prizes.

Irish music by Shannachie will enliven the evening. Pat Heffernan (guitar, vocals, songwriter, shennanigans) and Patrick Keane (bass, banjo, vocals, and “ham”) make up Shannachie. Since 1995, they’ve been having fun entertaining people with Irish pub singalong songs all over New England.

Join Jeremy D’Entremont, author of several books and hundreds of articles on lighthouse history, for a van tour of some of New England’s most beautiful and historic beacons. A portion of the proceeds from all tours is donated to help lighthouse preservation.
The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, May 30, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

New England Lighthouse Lovers Spring Cruise from Newburyport, MA
Saturday, June 6, 2009, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

NELL’s spring trip for 2009 (part of the spring meeting, June 5-7) will be a trip aboard the Prince of Wales with the Newburyport Whale Watch out of Newburyport, Massachusetts. The cruise will pass the following lighthouses: Newburyport Range, Plum Island, Annisquam, Straitsmouth, Thacher Island, Eastern Point, Gloucester Breakwater, Ten Pound Island, Baker’s Island, Hospital Point, Fort Pickering, Derby Wharf and Marblehead. The cruise will be narrated by lighthouse historian Jeremy D’Entremont. Please be at the dock by 8:45 a.m.

Lighthouses of Portsmouth and Portland van tour from Portsmouth, NH
Friday, June 12, 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Join Jeremy D’Entremont, author of several books and hundreds of articles on lighthouse history, for a van tour of some of New England’s most beautiful and historic beacons. A portion of the proceeds from all tours is donated to help lighthouse preservation.
The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. The next stop is York, Maine, to enjoy the picturesque Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. The last stop is a tour inside Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire. Participants are invited to climb the 44 stairs to the lantern to enjoy the magnificent view (incuding Whaleback Lighthouse) and to see the active Fresnel lens.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, June 13, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

Light-to-Light Walk/Run, Rockland, Maine

The third full week in June has been designated Maine Lighthouse Week, aimed at inviting and urging the people of Maine to observe the week with appropriate ceremony and activity to honor and commemorate the important role of lighthouses in Maine’s history.
The Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse celebrate the week iby sponsoring the Light-to-Light Walk/Run on Father’s Day (Sunday) each year. The race starts at Owls Head Light parking lot and continues 7.5 miles through the town of Owls Head and the city of Rockland to Mary Reed Park located at the beginning of the walk to Rockland Breakwater Light, at the end of Samoset Road. Join Jeremy D’Entremont, author of several books and hundreds of articles on lighthouse history, for a van tour of some of New England’s most beautiful and historic beacons. A portion of the proceeds from all tours is donated to help lighthouse preservation.
The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. The next stop is York, Maine, to enjoy the picturesque Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. The last stop is a tour inside Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, July 11, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

Join Jeremy D’Entremont, author of several books and hundreds of articles on lighthouse history, for a van tour of some of New England’s most beautiful and historic beacons. A portion of the proceeds from all tours is donated to help lighthouse preservation.
The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. The next stop is York, Maine, to enjoy the picturesque Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. The last stop is a tour inside Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire. Participants are invited to climb the 44 stairs to the lantern to enjoy the magnificent view (incuding Whaleback Lighthouse) and to see the active Fresnel lens.

Join the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse aboard the M/V Granite State, departing from Rye Harbor on Route 1A in Rye, NH, for a narrated evening cruise past three lighthouses and the historic Isles of Shoals. The cruise will pass close to White Island Light, Whaleback Light, Portsmouth Harbor Light, and the Wood Island Lifesaving Station. There is a snack bar and there will be raffles on board.The cruise will return to the dock between 9:00 and 9:30 p.m.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, July 25, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

Join Jeremy D’Entremont, author of several books and hundreds of articles on lighthouse history, for a van tour of some of New England’s most beautiful and historic beacons. A portion of the proceeds from all tours is donated to help lighthouse preservation.
The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. The next stop is York, Maine, to enjoy the picturesque Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, August 22, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

Saturday, September 5, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse Cruise from Rye, NH

This narrated cruise aboard the M/V Granite State will leave Rye Harbor on Route 1A at 8:30 a.m. It will pass close to White Island Light, Boon Island Light, Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, Whaleback Light, and Portsmouth Harbor Light. There is a snack bar and there will be raffles on board.The cruise will return to the dock at 1:00 p.m.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, October 3, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

Join Jeremy D’Entremont, author of several books and hundreds of articles on lighthouse history, for a van tour of some of New England’s most beautiful and historic beacons. A portion of the proceeds from all tours is donated to help lighthouse preservation.
The trip by van begins and ends in front of the Hanover Street entrance to the downtown parking garage at 34 Hanover Street in Portsmouth, NH. The tour starts with a visit to Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, one of the most breathtaking lighthouses in the United States. Admission to the Museum at Portland Head Light in the former keepers’ quarters is included. Next are the unique Portland Breakwater Light and Spring Point Ledge Light. Adjacent to Spring Point Ledge Light is the Portland Harbor Museum (admission included) and gift shop. Lunch (included in ticket price) is by the water at Joe’s Boathouse at Spring Point Marina in South Portland.
On the way back south, there’s a shopping stop at Lighthouse Depot, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. The next stop is York, Maine, to enjoy the picturesque Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. The last stop is a tour inside Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire. Participants are invited to climb the 44 stairs to the lantern to enjoy the magnificent view (incuding Whaleback Lighthouse) and to see the active Fresnel lens.

Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse (NH) Open House
Saturday, October 17, 2009, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
No reservations are needed; tours are on a first come, first served basis. No children under 42 inches tall are allowed to climb to the top, and adults are not allowed to carry children up the stairs. Visitors get to climb to the lantern room to enjoy the magnificent view and to see the fourth-order Fresnel lens up close.
To climb the lighthouse, a donation of $2 for adults and $1 for children is suggested. Volunteers will tell visitors about the history of the light station, and there will be souvenirs for sale.
There are 44 stairs to the watch room and a 7-rung ladder to the lantern room. Flat shoes (not sandals or flip-flops) are required to climb the ladder into the lantern room.

Accessibility: The tower is on the Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut and is easily accessible.
The tower is not open to the public.

Construction material: Concrete Height of tower: 41 feet. Focal plane: 55 feet. Active aid to navigation. Characteristic: Green flash every 4 seconds. Optic: Solar powered LED.

Directions: From I-95, take Exit 87, Route 349, the Clarence B. Sharp Highway. Turn right at the second traffic light onto Rainville Avenue. Turn left at the next traffic light onto Benham Road. Continue straight on Benham Road for approximately 1.7 miles to the Avery Point Campus at the University of Connecticut. It’s a short walk from the parking area to the lighthouse.
